Eden Prairie, Minnesota real estate for sale

Eden Prairie, Minnesota Real Estate

Eden Prairie, Minnesota, resides in the southwest suburbs of Minneapolis, about 18 miles from downtown. The city began life as a peaceful, bucolic village in 1858, an atmosphere it held onto for decades. Then, in the mid-1900s, Eden Prairie’s blissful, dome-like bubble burst.

As the Minneapolis metropolitan area grew, so did its suburban offspring, which birthed offspring of their own. Flying Cloud Airport landed on the edge of town in the 1960s, and Highway 494 inched its way into the city, beginning in the late 1950s. These two events signaled the end of Eden Prairie’s autonomous, small town existence.

Today, Eden Prairie real estate plays host to 60,797 happy residents, who enjoy its incredibly diverse housing options. It is the quintessential U.S. suburban city to which others of its ilk aspire. While this may sound a bit presumptuous, it’s backed up by CNN Money’s Best Places to Live rankings, in which Eden Prairie placed third in 2012 and first in 2010.

Shopping and Dining

One of the clear benefits of life in the suburbs is the close proximity to a virtually infinite amount of shopping and dining opportunities. This is especially true in Eden Prairie’s case. With a population of more than 60,000, its close proximity to downtown Minneapolis and other large suburbs, and multiple highways and byways making travel to all of these locations as easy as a cool breeze on a hot and muggy Minnesota summer day, Eden Prairie is truly a suburban shopper’s Shangri-La.

Within the friendly confines of Eden Prairie’s city limits, you will find not only its premier shopping destination, Eden Prairie Center, but also these fine retail retreats:

  • Prairie Village Mall
  • Prairieview Center
  • Edenvale Shopping Center
  • Anderson Lakes Center
  • Tower Square

The Mall of America and its more than 520 specialty and retail stores and 50 ethnically and economically diverse restaurants is only about 13 miles east of Eden Prairie. Some other fabulous shopping centers nearby are Southdale Center in Edina; Calhoun Square in Minneapolis; and Southtown Shopping Center in Bloomington.

With all of these malls and shopping centers in and around Eden Prairie, it’s a given that you will have all the fast food options at which you could shake a stick, so to speak. But Eden Prairie real estate also offers some of the finest dining choices in the Twin Cities. Here’s a list of just a few of them:

Parks and Recreation

The City of Eden Prairie offers a wide variety of parks and recreational facilities, such as public fishing piers, tennis courts, baseball fields, skating rinks and public beaches. Bikers, walkers, joggers and hikers enjoy the city’s more than 170 miles of multi-use trails, which wind their way through the town, and its nearly 10,000 acres of developed and undeveloped parkland and open spaces. Check out the Eden Prairie Park Finder for a comprehensive list of the city’s parks, trails and amenities.

Year-round programs, classes, team sports, and much more are offered to people of all ages and abilities through Eden Prairie’s Recreation Division. It also manages and maintains four recreational facilities: the Eden Prairie Art Center, Community Center, Outdoor Center and Senior Center.

Eden Prairie real estate boasts more than 14,000 housing options in all kinds of shapes, sizes and prices, including single-family homes, multi-unit developments and senior housing units. The CNN Money article from 2012 pointed to Eden Prairie’s intoxicating mix of relatively outstanding employment opportunities, the wealth of Mother Nature’s bounty, and a highly educated workforce as the primary reasons for the city’s lofty No.3 ranking.

If you’re in the market for a new job, Eden Prairie has you covered there too. The city is home to more than 2,200 businesses, many of which specialize in information technology, industrial equipment, and logistics and distribution. The city’s major employers include:

One other enviable attraction neighboring Minneapolis offers that even some of the nation’s much larger cities can’t is a team for which to cheer in each major professional sports league: the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings, Major League Baseball’s Minnesota Twins, the Minnesota Timberwolves of the NBA, and the National Hockey League’s Minnesota Wild, which plays its home games in Saint Paul.

Schools, Health, Transportation

The city’s K-12 public education needs are primarily met through Eden Prairie School District #272. Its 2012 total enrollment across six elementary schools, one middle school and one high school was 9,186.

There are a number of wonderful healthcare centers, medical care facilities and hospitals in the Eden Prairie area, including Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina, Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital and St. Francis Regional Medical Center.

Numerous interstate and state highways make commuting to and from Eden Prairie a breeze. For air travel, Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport is only 17 miles east of town, and SouthWest Transit offers residents and visitors express bus service into downtown Minneapolis and many other destinations.
