Prior Lake, Minnesota, is located in Scott County about 20 miles southwest of downtown Minneapolis. The City of Prior Lake's vast and extensive trail-and-park system encompasses more than 50 neighborhood and city parks, protected natural wildlife areas, and more than 30 athletic fields, including 16 softball and T-ball fields, seven baseball diamonds, two football fields and nine soccer fields.

Prior Lake is home to the largest employer in the county, the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) which operates two casinos, Mystic Lake Casino Hotel and Little Six Casino along with a variety of restaurants, a fitness center, an ice center and a hotel.

One other enviable attraction that neighboring Minneapolis offers, that even some of the nation’s much larger cities can’t, is a team for which to cheer in each major professional sports league: the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings, Major League Baseball’s Minnesota Twins, the Minnesota Timberwolves of the NBA, and the National Hockey League’s Minnesota Wild, which plays its home games in Saint Paul.

Prior Lake/Savage Area School District 719 serves the public education needs of Prior Lake and several other neighboring communities. The district contains five elementary schools, one middle school, one high school and a charter school (Aspen Academy K-3). There are also a number of private school options, including Prior Lake Christian Academy (K-12), St. Michael’s Catholic School (K-8) and St. Paul’s Lutheran School (K-8).

Queen of Peace Hospital, Fairview Southdale Hospital, St. Francis Regional Medical Center, and Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital are just a few of the health care centers, medical care facilities and hospitals conveniently available to Prior Lake's residents and visitors.
